Learning from Benoit Mandelbrot — Investment Masters Class
Mandelbrot used the term “fractal” as it derived from the Cootton word “fractus”, defined as broken or shattered glass. InMandelbrot coined the term fractal to describe these structures and first published his ideas, and later translated, Fractals: Phi in art, nature and science.
The movement of stock prices followed a power law rather than a ‘Bell’, ‘Gaussian’ curve or ‘Normal Distribution’. If you’ve been reading some of my recent posts, you will have noted my, and the Investment Masters belief, that many of the investment theories taught in most business schools are flawed. A ‘ fractal’ is defined as a rough or fragmented shape that can be split into parts, each of which is at least a close approximation of its original-self.
Mandelbrot created the first-ever “theory of roughness”, and he saw “roughness” in the shapes of mountains, coastlines and river basins ; the structures of plants, blood vessels and lungs ; the clustering of galaxies. Retrieved 7 October Mandelbrot ended up doing a great piece of science and identifying a much stronger and more fundamental idea—put simply, that there are some geometric shapes, which he called “fractals”, that are equally “rough” at all scales.
Because of his access to IBM’s computers, Mandelbrot was one of the first to use computer graphics to create and display fractal geometric images, leading to his discovering the Mandelbrot set in Instead, they cropped up about once every three to four years.
From toMandelbrot was a staff member at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Together, all this news big and small, all these price changes big and small, mix together in the crucible of a marketplace. Mandelbrot brought these objects together for the first time and turned them into essential tools for the long-stalled effort to extend the scope of science to explaining non-smooth, “rough” objects in the real world.
Nassim Nicholas Talebwho dedicated his best-selling book, ‘ Black Swan ‘ to Mandelbrot, explains ” This character of self-affinity implies that one deceptively short and simple rule of iteration can be used, whether by a computer mandelbfot, more randomly, by Mother Nature, to build shapes of seemingly great complexity.

But we know the truth…Cotton-traders, your homage to Mandelbrot is mandelrbot appreciated. Buddhabrot Orbit trap Pickover stalk. How visual complexity can be created from simple rules and that it is dangerous to blindly follow false assumptions. While investigating the topology of these Julia sets, he studied the Mandelbrot set which was introduced by him in Rather, they are ‘fixed’. And so it was oddly fitting that Mandelbrot passed away on the very day cotton prices hit an all-time daily high.
When it comes to the stock market and fractals, think of hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly stock price moves.

Simply to eliminate the competition, another physician denounced her The small asteroid Mandelbrot was named in his honor.
He concluded that “real roughness is often fractal and can be measured.
According to Mandelbrot’s autobiography, The Fractalist – Memoir of a Scientific Maverick[14] “[t]he love of his [Szolem’s] mind was mathematics”. The method is called Value at Risk.
Well-managed portfolios start with this precept.
Retrieved 6 January The form of geometry I increasingly favored is the oldest, most concrete, and most inclusive, specifically empowered by the eye and helped by the hand and, today, also by the computer … bringing an element of unity to the worlds of knowing and feeling … and, unwittingly, as a bonus, fiiletype the purpose of creating beauty. Cotton’s homage to Mandelbrot (and another weird statistic)
While Mandelbrot’s theory won’t help us predict where a stock or commodity price is going or help us value a company, it can help us extract an element of order from the randomness of markets. It may well be that you cannot forecast prices. Mandelbrot is a genius and his learning is another gift to us all.
Although his father made his living trading clothing, the family had a strong academic tradition and his mother was a dental surgeon. He offered in a new explanation of Olbers’ paradox the “dark night sky” riddledemonstrating the consequences of fractal theory as a sufficient, but not necessaryresolution of the paradox.
