The Birchbark House has to be one of the most beautifully written, lyrical books I’ ve ever read. Louise Erdrich has a way with words that is just. The Birchbark House. Louise Erdrichs von ihr selbst liebevoll illustriertes Kinderbuch gibt einen wunderbaren Einblick in das Leben der Indianer Nordamerikas. I would urge all parents to consider thd this book with their young ones, especially if they have loved, or plan to share, Wilder’s novels—which by all means you should.

I love erdruch all the birds, bears, and even the dogs. I did not read this book, but knowing Louise Erdrich to be borchbark fantastic author and wanting another perspective to the Little House series for my eight year old daughter, I bought this for her. What happens to Omakayas and her family? Detailed and accurate stories about Native Americans are sadly hard to find, so this book would be a treat even for adults.
The begining would make most older children put the book down after about the first chapter. It appears that Erdrich has written several more books in Omakayas’ ongoing journey, much in the same vein of Wilder.

Erdrich–a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwa–spoke to Ojibwa elders about the spirit and significance of Madeline Island, read letters from travelers, and even spent time with her own children on the island, observing their reactions louize woods, stones, crayfish, bear, and deer. She lives with Omakayas and her family.
I would recommend it for middle grade readers who enjoy historical fiction, and for those who are curious to learn more about indigenous cultures. The Blue Jay’s Dance, a memoir of motherhood, was her first nonfiction work, and her children’s book, Grandmother’s Pigeon, has been published by Hyperion Press. Everything keeps hinting at this great “dream” that “Little Frog” is supposed to get but nothing real Immediately the first paragraph catches your attention and you expect the story to be full of adventure and interesting.

After she was named writer-in-residence at Dartmouth, she married professor Michael Dorris and raised several children, some of them adopted. There are many characters in The Birchbark House. I enjoyed this story of a young Ojibwa girl, Omakayas, and her adoptive family.

Omakayas is a pleasure of a character, and I particularly loved seeing her rich and varied sibling relationships unfurl: They moved to slow for me and didn’t hold my attention let alone that of my 7 year old.
