Maybe it’s suffering from middle book syndrome. View all 7 comments. Sabriel sensed when the creature broke through her protection, and banished it to death with the Abhorsen’s sword and the bell Kibeth. In the course of drama, drama, drama, drama she becomes a librarian, visits places she’s not supposed to venture to and creates a magic dog of considerable powers, possibly even bigger than her own just like that. A delightful turn of events, one might say. Burying the pain of her Sightlessness in the Clayr’s great library, Third Assistant Librarian Lirael’s insatiable curiosity will soon lead her to an unbelievable destiny that may even be liael with that of the great Sabriel herself.
Character-wise, I adored Lirael. She also meets Mogget, a Free Magic construct who takes the form of a small white cat, wearing a collar with a powerful binding spell on it and a miniature Saraneth hanging from it. Most Clayr receive the Sight by the age of twelve.

Not that people lrael like this book, but that everyone would like it. Sameth flees the palace to rescue Nick, and is later joined by Mogget. When Colin and Susan are pursued by eerie creatures across Alderley Edge, they are saved by the Wizard. She retrieves the satchel which contains the Abhorsen’s bandelier of bells, the Abhorsen’s sword and a map of the Old Kingdom. An Uninteresting Villain, that one.
So is the portrayal of Death, which is a river, grey and cold, with currents pulling the dead through the Gates, nine in all before a soul goes beyond any necromancer’s ability to be summoned back. I felt like the book was way too long.
Not lrael her constant self-belittling, the Dog prods her into action that finally takes the direction of her tale towards an intriguing revelation of her potential heritage. But she’s a remembrancer, so she can use the dark mirror to See into the past.

This book deals with the loss of family Sabriel’s and Touchstone’s and coming to terms with oneself and one’s responsibilities. Her act leads to a meeting with a healer Lirael’s great-great-grandmother who fortifies her and urges her to take as her only friend the impertinent “Disreputable Dog,” a creature of suspicious magical origin whose true nature remains unknown.
Her black hair and pale, deathlike skin mark her immediately out from her fellow Clayr, but Lirael is also unusally quiet and reserved, because Lirael is very lonely. She constantly bemoans her situation, considers killing herself but decides that throwing herself off a glacier might not really be the way to gomakes constant bad decisions that seem to work out for her and so on and on and on.

Readers who like their fantasy intense in action, magisterial in scope, and apocalyptic in consequences will revel in every word. The enormous magical library where she works is a wonderful setting. These characters need CBT!

I liked the character of Lirael, whose abandonment and disappointment during childhood due to her inability to acquire the Sight birthright of her Clayr companions, did not prevent her from finding fulfillment in another direction.
Garth left Melbourne at an early age for Canberra the federal capital and stayed there till he was nineteen, when he left to drive around the UK in a beat-up Austin with a boot full of books and a Silver-Reed typewriter. Or the Disreputable bitch, if you want to get technical. I thought for sure there would be more of a split on it. This book may be and I hope is as I’m beginning the third book Abhorsen suffering from the well know “second book in a trilogy” syndrome. The next day, Sabriel and Mogget walk through a tunnel to another sinkhole, which Mogget determines to be Holehallow, the historical burial place of the royal family.
