This is a highly readable, comprehensive introduction to ecocriticism. There are a lot of literary examples that obscure the more important concepts. Concise, clear, and authoritative, Ecocriticism offers the ideal introduction to this crucial subject for students of literary and cultural studies.
Written from a more scientific perspective, the primer on Ecocriticism covers several key intersections between nature and the humanities while exposing the typical understandings of nature as mere property of humans or the over-mystified readings of nature that don’t do much for improving our world. I have to say though that, as a teacher of both literature and geography with a focus on sustainable developmentI garraard this work to be the perfect crossover between my two otherwise disparate subjects, and made me feel a little less schizophrenic as a teacher than normal Wilderness and Pastoral are, of course, foundational terms of the field and Garrard manages not only to provide an impressive level of depth gaerard his chapters but add something to ongoing discussions in the field.
While it was useful for the explanation of certain terms — “Wilderness” “Place” and “Dwelling” in particular — the students generally felt that too much time was spent on case studies that were wandering, verbose, and tangential. This is really an overview of the field, gathering a range of ideas from a variety of sources to provide an effective introduction to the field of ecocriticism.
It did bring me to notice a few things when reading or watching a movie, garard I didn’t before and it wasn’t a tough or long read, but I’m not sure it’s really worth anyone’s time.
